그건 저라는 에스키모 아이를 아주 머리끝까지 화나게 만들었어요

그래서 난 허리를 숙이고, 손을 뻗고, 퍼 올려서

장갑 한가득 푸짐히

그 살인적인 노란 눈을 모아 담았죠

바로 저기 허스키들이 가는 길에서 모아 올린 살인적인 노란 눈 말이에요!

그러고 나서 저는 그 장갑 가득한 살인적인 노란 눈 결정들을

그의 그 조그만 구슬같은 눈깔에다 문질러 넣기 시작했죠

역사적으로 이 고장 사람들에겐 알려지지 않은,

하지만 당신의 미신론에서 진흙상어의 자리를 꿰어찰 운명인,

아주 담대한 원을 그리며!

자, 이제 갑니다, 원 모양으로: 문지르세요!

 

그러곤, 화가 가득 난 상태로, 전, 전 마구 짓밟고

또 짓밟았죠

이런 미치고 환장할!

전 펄쩍 펄쩍 뛰었어요, 그의 가슴팍 위에서...

뭐, 아시겠지만, 그는 아주 분노한 상태였죠

그럴 만도 했죠, 왜냐하면

그 살인적인 노란 눈 결정들이 그의 시력을 앗아갔거든요

그리고 그는 일어나서 주위를 돌아보더니, 이렇게 말했어요

 

"앞이 안 보여, 앞이 안 보여, 오, 망했네, 앞이 안 보여

안돼 안돼, 앞이 안 보여, 안돼, 아

그가 개똥 눈덩이를 집어들고 내 오른쪽 눈에 쑤셔박았네

뭐, 그 모피 사냥꾼은 거기 우두커니 섰죠

꽁꽁 언 이 새하얀 황무지에서 두 팔 쫙 벌리고

그의 망가진 눈을 어찌해야 할지 고민하며

그리고 그가 고대 에스키모 전설 하나를 떠올린 건

바로 그 순간이었죠

거기엔 이렇게 쓰여있었는데,

그쪽에서 무슨 언어를 쓰는지는 모르겠지만 하여튼 그 언어로,

"만에 하나 나누크라는 이름의 사람과의 갈등의 결과로

눈에 문제가 발생하게 된다면

그걸 고칠 수 있는 유일한 방법은
