"누가 빨리 좀 와줘요!"
The horses got loose, got grass-sick

"말들이 풀려나서 풀을 너무 먹었어요"
They'll founder, fain, they'll die

"이러다 탈이 나고 쓰러져서 죽을 거예요"

What is now known by the sorrel and the roan?

이제 적갈색 말과 얼룩말이 무엇을 깨달았을까?
By the chestnut, and the bay, and the gelding grey?

밤색 말과 적갈색 말, 회색 거세마는 무엇을 알게 되었을까?
It is, stay by the gate you are given

그것은 바로, 주어진 울타리 안에 머무는 것,
And remain in your place, for your season

자신의 차례가 끝날 때까지 자신의 자리를 지키는 것.
And had the overfed dead but listened

풀을 너무 먹고 죽은 말들이 그 말을 들었더라면
To that high-fence, horse-sense, wisdom

But Did you hear that, Bear? said

그런데 "곰, 방금 들었어?"
Monkey, we'll get out of here, fair and square

라고 원숭이가 말했어. "우린 여기서 당당하게 빠져나갈 거야"
They left the gate open wide

사람들이 문을 활짝 열어둔 것이었다

So, my bride, here is my hand Where is your paw?

"그러니 내 신부, 여기 내 손이 있어. 네 발은 어디 있지?"
Try and understand my plan, Ursula

"내 계획을 이해해봐, Ursula"

My heart is a furnace

"내 심장은 용광로야"
Full of love that's just and earnest

"정당하고 진실한 사랑으로 뜨겁게 타고 있어"
Now you know that we must unlearn this

"이제 우리는 지금까지 배워온 걸 버려야 해"
Allegiance to a life of service

"평생 누군가를 섬기며 사는 것에 대한 충성을"
And no longer answer to that heartless

"그리고 더는 그 무정한"
Hay-monger, nor be his accomplice

"건초 장사꾼에게 복종하거나 그의 공범이 되지 말자"
The charlatan, with artless hustling

"촌스럽고 뻔한 수작을 부리는 그 사기꾼 말이야"
But Ursula, we've got to eat something

"하지만 Ursula, 우리도 뭔가 먹어야 하잖아"
And earn our keep, while still within

"우리가 아직 이곳에 있는 동안, 우리 먹을 몫 정도는 벌어야 해"
The borders of the land that man has girded

"인간이 경계를 둘러놓은 이 땅 안에서는"
All double-bolted and tightfisted

"이중으로 빗장을 걸어 잠그고 인색하게 틀어쥔 이 세상에서는"
Until we reach the open country

"우리가 탁 트인 자유의 땅에 닿을 때까지만"
A-steeped in milk and honey

"우유와 꿀이 넘쳐나는 곳!"

Will you keep your fancy clothes on, for me?

"나를 위해 그 화려한 옷을 조금만 더 입어줄래?"
Can you bare a little longer to wear that leash?

"그 목줄도 조금만 더 견디며 차고 있어줄 수 있겠어?"

My love, I swear by the air I breathe

"내 사랑, 내가 숨 쉬는 이 공기를 걸고 맹세할게"
Sooner or later, you'll bare your teeth

"조만간 너도 이를 드러낼 수 있게 될 거야"

But for now, just dance, darling

"하지만 지금은 그냥 춤춰줘, 자기야"
C'mon, will you dance, my darling?

"어서, 춤춰줄 거지, 자기야?"
Darling, there's a place for us

"자기야, 우리를 위한 곳이 있어"
Can we go, before I turn to dust?

Though the hills are groaning with excess

언덕들이 넘쳐나는 풍요 떄문에 신음하고 있고,

마치 끊임없는 음식이 차려진 식탁 같지만

They trooped past the guards

And the farmyards, all night till finally

밤새 농장을 지나 걸었고 마침내

The space they gained grew much farther than

그들이 이동한 거리가
The stone that Bear threw

곰이 던져놓은 돌보다도 훨씬 멀어졌어
To mark where they'd stop for tea

잠시 차를 마시며 쉬자고 표시해둔 그 돌보다.

But Walk a little faster, don't look backwards

하지만 "조금만 더 빨리 걸어, 뒤돌아보지 마."
Your feast is to the East, which lies a little past the pasture

"네가 배불리 먹을 잔치는 동쪽에 있어. 저 목초지를 조금만 더 지나면 돼"
And the blackbirds hear tea whistling they rise and clap

검은새들이 주전자에서 차 끓는 소리를 듣고 날아올라 박수를 치고
And their applause caws the kettle black

그 박수 소리는 까악거리며 주전자를 검다고 비난하지(자기 역시 같은 잘못을 하면서 남을 비난한다는 뜻)
And we can't have none of that

"그런 건 용납할 수 없어"
Move along, Bear, there, there, that's that

"계속 가, 곰아, 자, 됐어, 그만 쉬어."

 

Though cast in plaster

마치 석고로 만들어진 것처럼 굳어 있었지만
Our Ursula's heart beat faster

우리 Ursula의 심장은 점점 더 빠르게 뛰었어
Than monkey's ever will

원숭이의 심장이 평생 뛸 수 있는 것보다도 빠르게

But still, they had got to pay the bills

하지만 그래도 돈은 벌어야 했어
Hadn't they? That is what the monkey'd say

"안 그래?" 원숭이는 늘 그렇게 말했지

So, with the courage of a clown, or a cur

그래서 곰은 광대나 잡종개가 보여주는 것 같은 용기를 내
Or a kite, jerking tight at its tether

혹은 줄에 묶여 팽팽하게 잡아당겨지는 연처럼
In her dung-brown gown of fur

똥빛 갈색 털옷을 입고
And her jerkin of swan's down and leather

백조 솜털과 가죽으로 만든 조끼를 걸친 채
Bear would sway on her hind legs

곰은 뒷다리로 서서 몸을 흔들었어
The organ would grind dregs of song

손풍금은 노래의 찌꺼기 같은 선율을 갈아내듯 연주했고
For the pleasure of the children who'd shriek

아이들은 즐거워 비명을 질렀고
Throwing coins at her feet and recoiling in terror

곰의 발밑에 동전을 던지고는 무서워 뒤로 물러났어

 

Sing, Dance, darling

"노래 불러, 춤춰, 자기야"
C'mon, will you dance, my darling?

"어서, 춤출 거지, 자기?"
Oh darling, there's a place for us

"오 자기야, 우리를 위한 장소가 있다니까"
Can we go, before I turn to dust?

"내가 먼지가 되기 전에 갈 수 있을까?"
Oh my darling there's a place for us

"오 자기야 우리를 위한 장소가 있다니까"

Oh darling, c'mon, will you dance, my darling?

"오 자기야, 어서, 춤 출 거지? 우리 자기?"
You keep your eyes fixed on the highest hill

"저 가장 높은 언덕만 바라봐"
Where you'll ever-after eat your fill

"거기에 가면 평생 배불리 먹게 될 거야"
Oh my darling dear mine, if you dance

"오 나의 소중한 사랑, 네가 춤춘다면"

Deep in the night, shone a weak and miserly light

깊은 밤, 인색할 만큼 희미한 빛 하나가 비쳤어
Where the monkey shouldered his lamp

원숭이가 등불을 어깨에 메고 가던 곳에서
Someone had told him the

누군가 원숭이에게 말했어
Bear'd been wandering a fair piece away

곰이 꽤 멀리서 혼자 돌아다닌다고
From where they were camped

둘이 머물고 있는 곳에서 멀리 떨어져서
Someone had told him the bear'd been sneaking away

누군가는 곰이 몰래 빠져나간다고 알려줬어
To the seaside caverns, to bathe

바닷가 동굴로 목욕을 하러 간다고

And the thought troubled the monkey

그 생각에 원숭이는 불안해졌어
For he was afraid of spelunking

그는 동굴 탐험을 무서워했거든
Down in those caves, also afraid what the

그 동굴 아래로 내려가는 것도 무서웠고,
Village people would say if they saw the bear in that state

마을 사람들이 그런 모습의 곰을 보면 뭐라고 할지도 걱정했어

Lolling and splashing obscenely

곰은 외설적일 정도로 느긋하게 뒹굴며 물장구를 치고 있었고
Well, it seemed irrational, really

뭐, 원숭이게 그 모습은 비이성적으로 보였어, 진심으로.
Washing that face, washing that matted and flea-bit pelt

엉겨 붙고 벼룩에 뜯긴 얼굴과 털가죽을 씻고 있었지
In some sea-spit-shine old kelp dripping with brine

바다가 뱉어낸 듯 번쩍이는 물 속에서 오래된 다시마에는 소금물이 뚝뚝 떨어지고 있었어

But monkey just laughed, and he muttered

하지만 원숭이는 그냥 웃으며 중얼거렸어
When she comes back, Ursula will be bursting with pride

"돌아오면 Ursula는 아주 자랑스러워하겠지"
Till I jump up saying, You've been rolling in muck

"그때 내가 벌떡 일어나서 '너는 진흙탕에서 구르다 왔다'고 해줘야겠어"
Saying, You smell of garbage and grime

"'쓰레기랑 때 냄새가 난다'고"

 

But far out, far out, by now, by now

하지만 이미, 아주 멀리, 지금쯤은 아주 멀리
Far out, by now, Bear ploughed

곰은 물살을 가르며 멀리까지 나아가고 있었어
'Cause she would not drown

그녀는 가라앉지 않았으니까

 

First the outside-legs of the bear

먼저 곰의 바깥쪽 다리들이
Up and fell down, in the water, like knobby garters

들렸다가 물속으로 떨어져 나갔어, 울퉁불퉁한 가터처럼
Then the outside-arms of the bear

그리고 곰의 바깥쪽 팔들도
Fell off, as easy as if sloughed from boiled tomatoes

삶은 토마토 껍질이 벗겨지듯 쉽게 떨어져 나갔어
Lowered in a genteel curtsy

우아하게 커트시를 하듯 몸을 낮추며
Bear shed the mantle of her diluvian shoulders

곰은 홍수처럼 거대했던 어깨의 외투를 벗어버렸어
And, with a sigh she allowed the burden of belly to drop

그리고 한숨과 함께 무거운 배도 떨어져 나가도록 내버려두었어
Like an apron full of boulders

마치 바위가 한가득 든 앞치마처럼

 

If you could hold up her threadbare coat to the light

만약 너덜너덜해진 그녀의 털가죽을 빛에 들어 올려본다면
Where it's worn translucent in places

군데군데 닳아서 반투명해진 곳에서
You'd see spots where

너는 이런 흔적들을 볼 수 있을 거야
Almost every night of the year

거의 일 년 내내 매일 밤
Bear had been mending, suspending that baseness

곰이 그 비참함이 드러나지 않도록 자신의 털가죽을 꿰매고 또 꿰맨 흔적들을

 

Now her coat drags through the water

이제 그녀의 털가죽은 물속에서 질질 끌려가며
Bagging, with a life's-worth of hunger

평생 쌓인 굶주림을 담으려는 자루처럼
Limitless minnows

끝없이 많은 작은 물고기들을 담고 있어

In the magnetic embrace, balletic and glacial

자석처럼 끌어당기고, 발레처럼 우아하며, 빙하처럼 차가운
Of bear's insatiable shadow

곰의 만족할 줄 모르는 그림자 안에서

그곳에 남겨졌어, 그곳에
When Bear left Bear

곰이 곰을 떠났을 때

When bear stepped clear of bear

곰이 곰에게서 완전히 벗어났을 때
