Man, there was this clown

A real cute act

정말 귀여운 공연이었지.

 

But they didn’t laugh

하지만 사람들은 웃지 않았어.

 

Ah, you know, a few little things here and there, but not really

뭐, 여기저기서 조금 웃긴 반응은 있었지만, 진심은 아니었어.

 

And he was booking out in all these tank towns

그는 이런저런 작은 시골 마을에서 공연을 잡았고,

 

Playing the Rotary Club, and the Kiwanis Club and the American Legion Hall

로터리 클럽, 키와니스 클럽, 미국 재향군인회관 같은 곳에서 공연했지.

(모두 작은 동네 클럽을 지칭하며, 성공하지 못함을 의미함)

 

And he just wasn't making it

하지만 성공하진 못했어.

 

And he had all these wonderful things going on inside of him

그 안에는 여전히 멋진 것들이 꿈틀거리고 있었는데도 말이야.

 

All these greens and yellows and all these oranges

초록과 노랑, 주황들이 가득했는데도.

 

He's a real happy guy

그는 진심으로 행복한 사람이었어.

 

And all he wanted to do was to make these people laugh

And then something began to grow

그런데 어느 순간, 뭔가가 자라나기 시작했어.

 

Something that just wasn't good began to grow inside of this guy

전혀 좋지 않은 어떤 것이 그의 안에서 자라기 시작했지.

You know, it’s a funny thing

참 이상한 일이야.

 

Something began to trouble this clown

그 광대는 뭔가에 괴로워지기 시작했어.

 

You know little things, little things once in a while would happen

가끔씩 사소한 일들이 생기곤 했는데,

 

That would make that crowd begin to move

그 일들이 관중을 조금씩 반응하게 만들었어.

 

But they were never the right things

하지만 일어났어야 하는 일들은 아니였지.

Like for example the time the seal got sick on the stage, all over the stage

예를 들어, 어느 날 물개가 무대 위에서 토한 적이 있었어. 온 무대에 말이야.

 

The crowd just, just broke up, you know, little things like that

관중은 완전히 박장대소했지. 그런 사소한 일들 때문에 말이야.

 

And they weren't supposed to be in the act

그런 건 원래 공연의 일부가 아니었는데도.

 

And they weren't supposed to be funny

웃기려고 했던 것도 아닌데도.

 

This began to trouble him, and it bothered him

이런 일이 그를 괴롭히기 시작했고, 진심으로 신경 쓰였지.

 

This little thing began to grow inside

그 작았던 불편한 감정이 안에서 점점 커졌어.

 

All those greens and all those oranges, all those yellows

그 안의 초록과 주황, 노랑 색깔들이...

 

They just weren't as bright as they used to be

이전만큼 밝지가 않았지.

 

And all he wanted to do was to make that crowd laugh

There was this one night in Dubuque

듀뷰크에서의 어느 밤이었어.

(아이오와에 있는 도시, 별 의미없는 아무 도시를 의미함)

 

When he was playing this Rotary Club

로터리 클럽에서 공연하고 있었지.

 

All these dentists, and all these druggists, all these postmen sitting around

치과의사들, 약사들, 우체부들... 그런 사람들이 모여 있었어.

 

And they were a real cold bunch, nothing was happening

그리고 정말 싸늘했지. 아무 반응도 없었어.

 

He was leaving the stage when he stumbled over his ladder

그가 무대를 떠나려다 사다리에 걸려 넘어졌어.

 

And fell flat on his face, just flat on his face!

그리고 얼굴을 그대로 바닥에 쳐박고 넘어진 거야!

 

When he stands up he’s got this bloody nose

그가 일어났을 때, 코피가 줄줄 났어.

 

He looks out at the crowd and that crowd is just rolling on the floor, he’s just knocked them flat out!

그가 관중을 바라보자, 사람들은 바닥을 구르며 웃고 있었어. 완전히 넘어갔지!

 

This begins to trouble him even more

이건 그를 더 깊이 괴롭히기 시작했어.

 

And he begins to see something, he begins to see something

그리고 그는 뭔가를 보기 시작했어. 무언가를 깨달았지.

And right about here things began to change, but really change

Not the least of which our clown changes his act

Bought himself a set of football pads

미식축구 보호대를 샀고,

 

A yellow helmet with red stripes

노란 헬멧에 빨간 줄이 그어진 걸 썼지.

 

Hired a girl who dropped a five-pound sack of flour on his head every night

매일 밤 그의 머리 위에 5파운드짜리 밀가루 자루를 떨어뜨리는 여자를 고용했어.

 

From maybe twenty feet up

한 6미터쯤 되는 높이에서 말이야.

 

Oh man, what a bit, that just broke 'em up every night

이야, 그 장면은 매일 밤 관객들을 완전히 웃겨 버렸어.

 

But not like Dubuque

하지만 듀뷰크만큼은 아니었지.

 

And all those colors, all those yellows, all those reds, all those oranges

그의 안의 색깔들, 노랑과 빨강, 주황들이...

 

A lot of gray in there now, a lot of blue

이제는 회색이 많아졌고, 파란색도 많아졌어.

 

And all he wanted to do was to make this crowd laugh

They were laughing alright

And the dough started to come in

He was playing the big towns

Chicago, Detroit

And then it was Pittsburgh one night

그러다 어느 날 피츠버그 공연이 있었어.

 

Real fine town, Pittsburgh, you know

좋은 도시야, 피츠버그.

 

About three-quarters way through his act, a rope broke

공연이 4분의 3쯤 진행됐을 때, 밧줄 하나가 끊어졌어.

 

Down came the backdrop, right on the back of the neck

배경막이 떨어지면서 그의 목 뒤를 때렸지.

 

And he went flat

그는 그대로 바닥에 쓰러졌어.

 

And something broke

그리고 뭔가가 부러졌어.

 

This was it

이게 끝이었어.

 

It hurt way down deep inside

아주 깊은 곳까지 아팠지.

 

He tried to get up

그는 일어나려 했어.

 

He looked out at the audience

그리고 관객을 바라봤지.

 

And you should’ve, man you should’ve, you should’ve seen that crowd

They was rolling in the aisles

This was bigger than Dubuque

He really had 'em going
