Review: Danzig
Danzig | 1988 | 7.5/10
Genre: Hard Rock, Heavy Metal
Nostalgia comes in different flavors; 80s hard rock infused with heavy metal is one that I crave now and then. The reasoning behind the word choice of “nostalgia” is that this 40-minute piece never fails to deliver the euphoria felt by first-time hard rock listeners.
After founding the legendary group known as the Misfits, iconic for their eccentric and energetic punk music, Glenn Danzig decided to create another group named after himself to further expand the dark and demonic imagery frequently used throughout the Misfits' musical discography.
Catchy, entertaining guitar riffs flow through the album, surprisingly without a hint of being overdone or “corny,” per se. If I were to describe it from my perspective, every song on this album feels like the soundtrack for the most badass scene in an action film—there's no other way to put it. Despite being critically acclaimed, the album is perfectly approachable and is highly recommended as an introductory hard rock/heavy metal album.
Review: Velocity : Design : Comfort
Sweet Trip | 2003 | 10/10
Genre: Glitch Pop, Shoegaze
When pondering the true purpose of music, two main conclusions often emerge: to provide maximal entertainment or to push the boundaries of music through experimentation. Most albums fail to achieve both, as doing so requires crafting an entirely new sense of comfort.
As the name suggests, <Velocity : Design : Comfort> is a sonic journey that presents a novel soundscape inspired by glitchy electronic textures and starkly drawn guitar tones. The ethereal and hypnotic undertones accumulate throughout the LP, weaving a beautiful chaos. In my opinion, the album's key element is its dreamy vocals, which offer a familiar anchor whenever the listener risks becoming overwhelmed by the cryptic layers of instrumentation.
In retrospect, <Velocity : Design : Comfort> feels like a flawless work—both a milestone and a testament to the immense potential of what an indie artist can achieve when they master cutting-edge sounds and thoughtfully integrate their personal artistic touch.
Review: Beats and Breaks from the Flower Patch
Kitty Craft | 1998 | 7.5/10
Genre: Twee Pop
Sunshine bottled in the delicate crevasse of a vinyl. No signs of withering to be seen. <Beats and Breaks from the Flower Patch> captures the essence of comfort and bliss into a short 40-minute piece. A perfect piece to tuck you into your comfort place, no surprises, no harshness.
<Beats and Breaks from the Flower Patch> is a quintessential twee-pop album with its sound diving focusing on the "twee" sonics, resulting in a cohesive listening experience. One interesting kick it offers is the percussions that uncannily resemble that of a hip-hop record, which cuts down on the mellow aspects of the piece.
A recommended for all listeners who indulge in the classic "indie" sound and are looking forward to digging the genre of "Twee Pop."
