Compton was the American dream.

Compton도 한때는 아메리칸 드림이 이뤄지는 곳이었지

Sunny California with a palm tree in the front yard, the camper, the boat.

햇살이 내리쬐는 캘리포니아 동네.. 앞마당에는 야자수가 있고 캠프 트럭에 보트도 한 대씩 있고

Temptingly close to the Los Angeles ghetto in the 50's and 60's, it became "The Black American Dream."

50년대와 60년대의 LA 게토와 비슷해지며 “흑인의 아메리칸 드림”이 되어갔어

Open housing paved the way as middle-class blacks flooded into the city.

 오픈 하우징 정책은 중산층 흑인들이 이 도시로 들어오도록 문을 열어 주었지

Whites don't buy houses in Compton anymore.

이제 백인들은 Compton에 집을 사지 않아

Now with 74% of the population, black power is the fact of life.

인구의 74%가 흑인이 됐고 블랙 파워는 일상이 됐어

From banks to bowling alleys.

은행에서 볼링장까지

But the dream that many blacks thought they were buying has turned sour.

하지만 많은 흑인들이 손에 넣었다고 생각했던 꿈은 시들어갔어

Though the mayor and four out of five city councilmen are black, they have been unable to solve the problems of crime.

And growing welfare, which is slowly turning suburban Compton into an extension of the black inner city.

47 homicides last year gave Compton one of the highest per capita rates in the country.
