[Stevie Smith about her poem "Not Waving but Drowning"]
I read about a man getting drowned once
언젠가, 익사 중인 남자에 관한 글을 읽었지
His friends thought he was waving to them from the sea but really, he was drowning
친구들은 그가 바다에서 손을 흔들어 인사하고 있다고 생각했지만, 사실 그는 가라앉고 있었던 거야
And then I thought that, in a way, it is true of life too
나는, 어떻게 보면 그건 인생에서도 마찬가지라 생각했어
That a lot of people pretend, out of bravery really
많은 사람들은, 용기를 활용해서,
That they are very jolly and ordinary sort of chaps
자기들은 즐겁고, 평범한 사람들인 척을 하지만
But really they do not feel at home at all in the world
사실 그들은 이 세상 어디에서도 안정감을 찾지 못하고
Or able to make friends easily
친구를 쉽게 만들지도 못해
So then they joke a lot and laugh
그래서 그들은 농담을 하고 웃고
And people think they're quite alright and jolly nice too
사람들은 자신들이 괜찮고 즐거운 사람이라 생각하지
But sometimes that brave pretense breaks down
하지만 가끔은 그 용감한 연기도 무너지고
And then, like the poor man in this poem, they are lost
마치 이 시 속의 불쌍한 이처럼, 그들은 사라지게 돼
Not waving, but drowning
손을 흔드는게 아니라, 익사하는 거지
