목록을 정리하며, 나는 내가 감당할 수 있는 양보다 더 많은 음악을 쓸데 없이 듣고 있는 것 같다는 생각을 했다.

아마 내일 다시 짠다면 목록은 또 달라질 것이다. 2025년 12월 31일 현재 내 정서에 가장 적절한 순서대로 모았을 뿐이다.

80년대 일본의 언더그라운드 레이블 DD 레코즈의 컴필레이션 앨범. 1위부터 50위까지 선정하고 나니 컴필 앨범 하나쯤은 추가해도 될 듯하여 골랐음. 펑크부터 일렉트로닉까지 다양한 스펙트럼을 맛볼 수 있는 희귀 음원들. 대중적인 사운드를 기피한다면 추천함.

Oren Ambarchi 요주의 인물임. 올해 참여한 앨범들 다 좋았는데 특히 이 앨범을 많이 들었다. 아름다운 앰비언트 포크.

 

 

 

 

 

#21 Shelter & Orion With Turner Williams Jr. - Krakatoa

자장가로 많이 들었다. 한없이 일렁이고 또 일렁이는 음악.

 

 

 

 

 

#20 Maggie Nicols & Geoff Eales - Beautiful Love

그냥 재즈 피아노 반주에 노래 부르는 것뿐인데 이상하게 마음이 휘어잡힌다. 정말 강력한 힘을 지닌 앨범.

 

 

 

 

 

#19 IQ - Dominion

네오 프로그레시브 레전드인 IQ의 신작 발매는 꽤나 놀라운 소식이었고 앨범은 더할 나위 없이 만족스러웠다.

 

 

 

 

 

#18 James McKain, Damon Smith & Weasel Walter - ....seeing the way the mole tunnels...

즉흥 연주의 매력이라는 것이 폭발한다. 비유가 아니다. 정말 폭발한다.

 

 

 

 

 

#17 Mal Devisa - Palimpsesa

알앤비와 힙합을 베이스로 자기가 하고 싶은 걸 다 한다. 29트랙 89분 동안 지루한 순간이 전혀 없다. 얼터너티브 뮤직이 어디까지 보여줄 수 있는지에 대한 성공 사례.

 

 

 

 

 

#16 Coroner - Dissonance Theory

올해도 정말 수많은 메탈 앨범들이 나왔지만 그 어느 것도 이 앨범을 넘어서지 못했다. 신작이 나오기까지의 30년 동안 그들은 음악의 도를 깨우쳐 달인이 되었다.

 

 

 

 

 

#15 Jeff Tweedy - Twilight Override

넘버원 인디록 송라이터의 황금 작곡 모음. 창작력이 도무지 바닥을 보이지 않는다. 좋은 앨범이요? 어렵지 않아요. 곡을 잘 쓰면 됩니다.

 

 

 

 

 

#14 Arthur Russell - Open Vocal Phrases Where Songs Come In and Out (Live 12/20/85)

이 목소리를 따라가다 보면 어디에 닿게 될까? 보일듯 말듯한 목소리를 따라가다 보면 어느새 마음이 치유되어 있는 것을 느낄 수 있다.

 

 

 

 

 

#13 Daniel Bachman - Moving Through Light

겹겹이 쌓이는 소리들이 마음속 수많은 감정의 겹들과 조응한다. 소리들은 빛이 되어 흩어졌다가 다시 어둠이 되어 한 점에 모인다.

 

 

 

 

 

#12 The Necks - Disquiet

4트랙 189분. 재즈의 본질은 결국 연주다. 그리고 짧은 호흡으로는 제대로 포착되지 않는 연주야말로 재즈다. 재즈 찐팬들만이 좋아할 수 있는 앨범.

 

 

 

 

 

#11 Merzbow, Iggor Cavalera, Eraldo Bernocchi - Nocturnal Rainforest

이 기괴한 트리오는 밤의 정글에서 무엇을 표현하고 싶었을까. 밀려오는 소리들을 들으며 컴컴한 어둠을 바탕으로 나 또한 무엇을 느끼고 있는 걸까. 참고로 Iggor Cavalera는 Sepultura에서 드럼을 쳤던 그 사람이 맞다.

 

 

 

 

 

#10 Fred Van Hove - I-II-III

1996년에 CD 50장 한정반으로 발매된 바 있는 전설의 라이브 녹음이 음원으로 재발매되었다. Fred Van Hove는 Peter Brötzmann의 Machine Gun 앨범에 참여했던 그 피아니스트. 기묘한 아름다움이 건반 하나하나에 묻어 나와 반복 청취를 유도한다.

 

 

 

 

 

#9 Adrianne Lenker - Live at Revolution Hall

라이브 앨범만이 가지는 질감의 매력이 최대치로 구현된 앨범. 분명 올해 발매작인데 저 멀리 아련한 추억 속에서 들려오는 듯한 목소리와 연주.

 

 

 

 

 

#8 The Stylistics - Falling in Love with My Girl

과거의 클래식 소울 뮤직이 지닌 낭만과 감수성이 가득하다 못해 흘러 넘치는 가슴 시린 앨범. 더 많은 사람들이 그 시절 알앤비/소울의 아름다움을 알았으면 좋겠다.

 

 

 

 

 

#7 Bruce Springsteen - Tracks II: The Lost Albums

브루스 스프링스틴의 미발표 앨범 7장. 백인 아재가 부르는 로큰롤이지만 이상하게도 그 안에는 소울이 있다. 각기 다른 시기에 다른 색깔로 녹음된 음원들을 듣고 있으면 브루스 옹의 인생길을 따라가 보는 것 같아서 뭉클하다.

 

 

 

 

 

#6 Sister Irene O'Connor - Fire of God's Love

호주의 수녀 아이린 오코너가 1976년에 기타와 오르간 반주로 노래해 녹음한 전설의 앨범. 50년 만의 재발매라고 한다. 찬송가가 아니라 전곡 자작곡이다. 수녀님의 음악인데 놀랍도록 사이키델릭하다. 올해 들은 앨범들 중 가장 어이 없으면서 가장 매혹적이었던 앨범.

 

 

 

 

 

#5 Son of Chi - We Carry Eden

느릿느릿한 덥 리듬과 재즈 선율에 얹히는 인간의 탄생과 죽음의 이야기. 그 이야기 속에 숨어 있는 이 세상 모든 것의 소리들. 종잡을 수 없는 소리들의 집합체에 넋을 잃고 빠져들게 된다.

 

 

 

 

 

#4 Sunik Kim - Formenverwandler

그 어떤 음악도 소리의 영역을 벗어나지 못한다고 보면, 음악의 종착지는 결국 소리가 아닐까. 창작자가 전달하는 소리를 듣고 내가 무엇을 느낄 것인지는 내가 결정하지 창작자가 결정하는 것은 아니다. 그러나 창작자의 의도를 재미 삼아 들여다볼 수는 있을 것이다. 이 앨범은 바로 그런 재미가 있는 앨범이고 이런 앨범은 흔하지 않다.

 

 

 

 

 

#3 Kevin Drumm - Sheer Hellish Miasma II

불순물이 섞이지 않은 순도 100%의 노이즈. 순수한 노이즈의 세례를 귀를 통해 온몸으로 받아들이고 나면 몸도 마음도 정화된 것 같은 느낌(착각?)이 든다. 맑은 증류수처럼 투명하고 깨끗한 노이즈라는 것이 존재할 수 있다니.

 

 

 

 

#2 francisco lópez - untitled (2023-2024)

마음이 좋지 않을 때 자면서 많이 들었다. 소리들이 안내하는 곳으로 따라가 몸을 눕히고 푹 쉬곤 했다. 그리고 아무 맥락 없이 어지럽기만 한 꿈을 꾸었다.

 

 

 

 

#1 The Sleep of Reason Produced Monsters - S/T

오래 고민했지만 어쩔 수 없이 이 앨범을 2025년 최고의 앨범으로 기억하고자 한다. 프리재즈의 즉흥 연주가 쉴 틈 없이 흘러 나오는 가운데 어딘가에서는 누군가가 턴테이블로 끊임없이 디제잉을 한다. 그러다가 어딘가에선 또 누가 육중한 베이스 연주로 굉음을 내며 이게 프리재즈인지 힙합인지 프로그레시브 메탈인지 아니면 그냥 음식물 쓰레기인지 혼돈에 빠지게 한다. 그런데 올해 그 어떤 앨범도 나를 이 앨범만큼 혼란스럽게 만들지 못했다.
